5 Best Urban Wine Vineyards of Vienna

Updated: Sep 24, 2023

Vienna is the capital of classical music. But classical music isn't the only thing that the Austrian capital has to offer. Vienna's wine scene is Austria's best-kept secret, with Heuringens serving local wines.

Heurigen (pronounced "hoy-reh-gehn") are wine taverns where winemakers have an exclusive license to serve wine during the growing season. Food is often served and music is also played, guaranteeing a good time.

Here are 5 of the best urban wine vineyards that you will want to visit.

Weingut Wieniger - Nussberg

This vineyard has several locations in Austria - Bisamberg, Nussberg, and Ried Falkenburg. The Nussberg branch is where wines of the Gemischter Satz grapes, including Riesling and Grüner, are grown. It's located at Eichelhofweg 125, 1190 Vienna and the best time to visit is from mid-April to late October.

Mayer am Nussberg

Mayer am Nussberg is close to the city, in the town Grinzig. Local wines and Austrian cuisine are served here - the sparkling rosé is the highlight of the menu. The location is perfect for hiking, as it's nestled in the Kahlenberg hill. This popular tavern is located on Kahlenberger Straße bei Nr. 210, 1190 Vienna. The best time to visit is from mid-April to the end of October.

Weingut Wien Cobenzl

Weinigut Wien Cobenzl offers tastings and tours to visitors and locals alike. This vineyard features wines made from 150 different vineyards - visitors to this establishment are spoilt for choice! The address is Gölsdorfgasse 2, 1010 Vienna. Visitors can pay a visit all year round.

Kierlinger Vineyards & Wine Tavern

This vineyard is one of the oldest featured on this list, as it's been operating for over two centuries. Located in the Kahlenberg, Kierlinger Vineyards & Wine Tavern is perfect if you want to travel out of Vienna for a day trip. The address is Kahlenberger Str. 20, 1190 Vienna and can be visited all year round.

H.P. Göbel

H.P. Göbel is a wine tavern known for its delicious food as well as its wine. This tavern is located in Stammersdorf, between Vienna and the Lower Austria boundaries. H.P. Göbel is located at Stammersdorfer Kellergasse 131, 1210 Vienna. The best time to visit is from mid-April to late November.

While Vienna is known for being the home of classical music, some Heuringens are dotted all over the city. The Heuringens serve traditional Austrian cuisine and glasses of locally-produced wines to wash it down with. If you don't pay a visit to one of these places while in Vienna, you're missing out on a unique culinary experience.
